W did an interview with Avril recently and she said the following:"I've been [spitting] the whole time I've lived in LA and that one time it turned into this big story. It's like they just needed a story at the time because Tom Cruise wasn't getting married that week. The paparazzi want me to wave and be like, 'Hi,' like Paris Hilton does. A lot of the girls love--love -- the paparazzi. It's, like, the only reason they're famous."
